How to use it

  1. Paste your textThe count updates as you type.
  2. Pick where it is goingPost, headline, About or comment. Each has its own limit and the bar adjusts.
  3. Check your remaining marginIf you go over, it tells you by how many characters and where you are cutting.

LinkedIn's real limits

A post allows 3,000 characters. The profile headline, 220. The About section, 2,600. A comment, 1,250.

Those are the hard caps: hit them and the field stops accepting text. But the limit that actually matters is a different one, and it is far lower: the «…see more» cut, which collapses your post to a few lines in the feed. Writing 3,000 characters is pointless if nobody expands.

Why this counter disagrees with Word

LinkedIn counts UTF-16 units, which is how the text is stored internally. Most counters count characters as a person sees them. For plain English text they agree, but the moment you add an emoji or a styled letter they diverge.

An emoji counts as 2. A bold letter counts as 2. A bold letter with an accent counts as 3.

Which means a post with twenty emoji spends forty characters of your budget, not twenty. That is why this counter shows all three figures at once, and the one that governs is the unit count.

How much you should actually write

The cap is 3,000, but the posts that work in the feed sit well below it.

What is decisive is the opening lines: they are the only part visible before the cut, and they decide whether anyone expands or keeps scrolling. Everything after that is read only by people who already clicked.

If you are going to measure one thing, measure that: use the preview tool to see where you get cut and make sure the whole hook fits above the line.

Frequently asked questions

What is the LinkedIn post character limit?
3,000 characters. The editor stops accepting text at the cap.
And the headline?
220 characters. It is the field under your name and the most-read part of your whole profile.
Does an emoji count as one character?
No, it counts as two. Some, like those with a skin-tone modifier, count as four.
Do spaces and line breaks count?
Yes, both. A line break costs one character, same as a letter.
Why does my bold text count double?
Because they are not normal letters: they are characters from another Unicode block that take two units each. Bold on LinkedIn literally costs double your budget.
