What is linkedin impressions?

Definition: An impression is each time your post appears on someone's screen. It counts appearances, not people: if the same user scrolls past your post twice, two impressions are recorded. This differs from «members reached», which counts unique people.

The distinction between impressions and reach causes the most confusion when reading post analytics. Impressions are always equal to or higher than members reached, and the gap between the two figures tells you how many times on average your content reappeared to the same person.

An impression does not imply reading. LinkedIn records it when the post enters the visible area of the screen, even if the user keeps scrolling without pausing. That is why a high impression count with few interactions usually means the content is being distributed but is not landing in the opening lines, which are all that shows before «see more».

Engagement rate is calculated by dividing by impressions, not by followers or by reach. A different denominator gives a different result, so comparing your rate with someone else's only means something if you both use the same formula.
