What is dwell time on linkedin?

Definition: Dwell time is how long a user stays reading or interacting with a LinkedIn post before continuing to scroll. It is one of the most important algorithm metrics since 2024: the higher the average dwell time of a post, the broader its organic distribution.

LinkedIn measures dwell time by combining two signals: the length of the scroll pause over the post and the active reading time detected (eyes and cursor on the content). A low dwell time (< 2 seconds) is interpreted as low-relevance content and limits distribution; a high dwell time (> 6 seconds) is the strongest signal to amplify reach.

The formats that maximize dwell time are native carousels (PDF documents uploaded to LinkedIn), long-form text posts with hooks at the start, short videos with subtitles, and numbered lists with a scannable format. External links, on the other hand, reduce dwell time because they pull the user off the platform.
